SEND Services: Autism Team (ASD) (ASC)
COVID-19 UPDATE: During Lockdown we continue to offer support both in settings and remotely.
We provide a range of support, training and advice, to schools and other educational providers and settings. This ensures that children and young people with Autism have opportunities to achieve their educational goals and acquire the skills they need to gain independence in learning and in life.
We can support children and young people with or without a diagnosis; as we believe that offering timely support is crucial to future outcomes.

Invaluable Support (Submitted by Record Owner)
“The Autism Team’s advice and support has been invaluable in regard to a pupil we had that new to our Reception cohort showing many very challenging behaviours. Initially, the team gave advice via phone calls and then attended school to observe the child and their behaviours, strengths and areas of difficulty. The Autism Team suggested a variety of strategies including, creating a safe space with photographs of familiar family members, Now/Next, visual communication aids, taking the learning to the child in the classroom context, reducing demands and having a transportable box of favourite items. Eventually the child was able to cope with some of the rules, routines and expectations of the daily timetable. During transition to the next class, again the team’s advice was sought, and new strategies were given such as the use of a workstation, now/next/then with motivators, red/green spots on doors and a focus upon building relationships. This child is now able to follow simple instructions, follow now/then/next structure to complete tasks at his workstation and is much more regulated in his behaviours. Academically, he is making good progress and he is generally a much happier, calmer and very chatty young man!” A Stoke-on Trent SENCO (February 2021)
