- How does this setting know if their children/young person needs extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?
Haywood Academy is a fully committed school, dedicated to ensuring that all students reach their full potential. Every student’s individual needs are catered for at the Academy and all students views regarding their learning style and additional learning needs are taken into account. Haywood Academy is prepared for any student with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and endeavor to support these students to ensure maximum progress.
If your child is thought to have a Special Educational Need, then they are made aware to the Learning Support Manager, who will action any necessary support that is required. The Learning Support Manager will work in partnership with the student, parent/carer and other educational professionals, such as Statutory Assessment, Educational Psychologist and the careers service to ensure appropriate provision is put into place at the Academy so that the student achieves to their maximum potential.

- How will the setting support my child/young person?
Support is individualised to students’ individual needs. The Learning Support Team offer in-class support (on a 1:1 or group basis), withdrawal sessions for Speech and Language, Literacy, Mathematics and Social and Emotional Needs.
- How will teaching approaches and the curriculum be matched to my child or young person's needs?
At Haywood Academy, the students are tested on entry to the school to determine their learning ability. Students are then set in a teaching group to ensure they receive appropriate quality first teaching to ensure that they make the expected level of progress.
All lessons are fully differentiated to all students learning needs and abilities. Students’ will also receive support and guidance via the careers service and the Learning Support Team when choosing subjects to study at GCSE level. Some students may also receive access arrangements (in the form of a reader or scribe) for external and internal examinations.
- How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support their learning?
At Haywood Academy, students’ progress in all of their subjects is closely monitored by class teachers, support staff, Heads of Department/Faculty and the Senior Leadership Team. This data is shared with parents via the post half-termly and you will also be invited into school to discuss progress with the relevant form tutor. Parents are also encouraged to contact the Learning Support Manager with any worries or concerns that they may have.
- What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall wellbeing?
All students, regardless of Special Educational Need meet four times a week with their form tutor during tutorial, where students can share any worries or concerns. Additionally, they will engage with the Academic Mentoring programme with their form tutor to discuss progress in individual subjects. Students’ also have the opportunity to engage with outside agencies such as Dove, Young Minds, Base 58 and Changes via Multi-Agency Centre (MACS) place.
- What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting?
Haywood Academy liaise with many outside agencies to support students’ varying individual needs. These include CAMHS, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Careers advisors and school nurses.
- What training are the staff supporting children and young people with SEND have had or are having?
All members if the Learning Support Team have gained, or are working towards Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Some members of the team hold HNC’s, HND’s, Foundation Degrees and Degrees. All teaching and non-teaching staff regularly engage in SEND training and all competent in working with students’ who have a Special Educational Need.
- How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?
All students’ will engage in Haywood Academy’s planned trips and visits. If necessary, support will also be provided to the student. Haywood Academy also offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities which students are invited to participate in.
- How accessible is the environment?
Haywood Academy has recently gone through extensive refurbishment under the BSF programme. All areas of the school are fully accessible and students who have a physical or sensory impairment will have an individual fire-evacuation plan, should there be an emergency.
- How will the setting prepare and support my child/young person to join the next stage of education and life?
Haywood Academy’s strong ethos of ‘Inspiring Creativity and Achievement’ is fully embedded across the school. Students are well supported in making the vital decisions regarding their future. From Year Eight, students are supported by both the careers service and the Learning Support Team in making choices for their GCSE curriculum. All students with a Special Educational Need are supported by the Learning Support Team in choosing appropriate options. Further into Key Stage Four, students’ engage in a variety of careers appointments and evenings to consider their options for Post-16. This transition into post-16 and adulthood is fully supported by the Learning Support Team.
- How are the setting's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?
On entry to Haywood Academy assessments and information is gathered to determine how best the Academy can support students with Special Educational Needs. Parents/carers, teachers, support staff and the Learning Support Manager/Assistant SENCO are all actively involved in the decision making process. The Academy will endeavour to support students’ wherever is necessary to ensure they achieve expected progress.
- How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
Support is given based on students’ individual needs. Parents/carers, teachers, support staff and the Learning Support Manager/Assistant SENCO are all actively involved in the decision making process. This is constantly reviewed and can change according to a students’ needs.
- How will our child and young person be involved in the decisions about their learning?
Your child will be involved in the decision making process via the Academies 'Student voice'. This is done half-termly. In addition to this, views will also be sought via the pupil contributions during the annual review process. There is also an open door policy where your child can speak to a member of the Learning Support Department whenever they feel it is appropriate to discuss thier needs.
- How will we be involved in the decisions about the learning of our children and young people?
Parent / carer views are vital to us at Haywood Academy. Your views are often sought via a parent survery but in addition to this you can discuss the provision of your child during the many opportunities you come into the Academy. These are during Academic Progress Days, parents evenings and SEN Drop In days. Finally, you can make an appointment to visit the Learning Support Manager.
- How are parents involved in the setting? How can I be involved?
Haywood Academy’s strong ethos of ‘Inspiring Creativity and Achievement’ is embedded across the school community, including parents/carers. Parent and carer views are always taken into consideration and are sought regularly during parents’ evenings and parents/carers are regularly involved in the planning and evaluating of teaching and learning activities for their child. Additionally, parents/carers can use the ‘Contact’ tab on the Haywood Academy website to share their views.
- What do I I do if I want to make a complaint?
All complaints to the Academy should be referred to the Head of School via the Learning Support Manager.
