The Avenue (part of Belgrave St. Bartholomew's Academy)

OFSTED rating

The Avenue is an Early Years Special Needs Unit which offers places to children from the age of 3 up to 5 years (the Foundation Stage). We are part of Belgrave St. Bartholomew’s Academy but have our own site and staff, with our building located a 5 minute walk from the main school.

All of our amazing children are unique and have a wide variety of individual needs. We use a highly personalised approach to learning, beginning by linking our children with a key person who has the skills and specialist training to meet their individual needs.

Contact notes

The Early Years SEN resource offers enhanced specialist support within a 25 place unit for children whose primary area of need is communication and/or shared attention and who often have a severe speech and language delay as a result.

All children who are placed within the resource will be supported through provision as outlined in an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The resource also offers a limited number of assessment places for children who have not yet been referred for an Education, Health and Care Plan but have additional needs such as language delay or global developmental delay.

Children who attend the resource make good progress in language and communication due to the intensive Specialist Support, whether through the use of Makaton, PECS or spoken language.

FACILITIES

We have a lovely, welcoming building which has had considerable improvements made to it over the past year. Our children access an amazing indoor and outdoor environment which is designed to provide lots of opportunities for language enrichment and the development of play skills.

CURRICULUM

Our children follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum. The children will be taught how to play with their friends and enjoy new creative learning experiences. Individual strengths and interests are valued and provide the starting point for teaching new skills. Children are supported to develop their communication and self-help skills and learn to enjoy the world around them.

PARENTS

At The Avenue we pride ourselves on the work that we do with our parents. We recognise that parents play a key role in supporting their child’s language, social and emotional, and learning development. The Early Years SEN base will support parents within these key roles, and we are happy to attend appointments, where possible, if this is supportive to parents.
