Exploring AI to Enhance SEND Services in Stoke-on-Trent

We’re excited to share that Stoke-on-Trent is exploring how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could help improve services for children and young people with SEND.

Our SENMAS team is currently trialling AI to support parts of the Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan process.

Why AI?

Our goal is to provide the best possible support. By using AI to assist with drafting EHC plans, we hope to free up our dedicated SEND Caseworkers to spend more time working directly with families. This means quicker responses, more proactive communication, and better support throughout the assessment and review process.

How could it help?

AI may help generate initial drafts of EHC plans by pulling key information from reports. Caseworkers will then tailor and review these drafts to ensure they reflect each child’s unique needs. If successful, we’ll also explore using AI to support annual reviews and keep plans up to date.

What’s next?

We’re in the early stages and will be closely monitoring the trial. Quality assurance remains a top priority—every plan will be person-centred and reviewed by experienced staff.

AI won’t replace the human touch—it’s here to enhance it. If you have questions or feedback, please contact Daniel.Marson@stoke.gov.uk.  We’re listening and committed to working with you every step of the way.
