What is an EHCP?
An EHC plan, also called an Education, Health and Care Plan, is a way to get extra support for children and young people with complex special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Here's what you need to know:
- Who needs an EHC plan? It's for children and young adults up to 25 years old whose needs are too complex for regular SEND support in a mainstream school.
- What does it do? An EHC plan is a legal document that outlines a child's specific needs in education, health, and care. It also details the extra support they need to succeed and reach their full potential.
- How is it made? The plan is based on the child's individual needs and goals, and it involves collaboration between parents, teachers, and other specialists.
- How long does it last? An EHC plan can start as early as birth and may stay in place until the young person turns 25 (subject to change dependant on if all needs have been met and can be cancelled post 18 if the young person decided they no longer want to continue in education). There are regular reviews to ensure the plan keeps meeting their needs.
- Preparing for adulthood: For young people aged 14 and above, the EHC plan should include a plan for transitioning smoothly into adulthood.
