School's extended local offer response

Who we are

Edison Pace School is a trauma informed specialist provision for children and young people aged 7 to 18 who exhibit a range of complex needs that may include social, emotional and mental health needs. Students are placed with us from a wide range of local authorities, and they all have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

We ensure, and promote, the care of our students by setting, respecting and expecting high standards in all aspects of school life. We meet the needs of our students, preparing them for adult and working life in the 21st century. Our vision for our curriculum is to provide a broad and balanced education, based on the realities of modern life delivered in a therapeutic learning environment.

All students at Edison Pace School have a full-time education offer that is personalised, engaging and encompasses a purposeful and ambitious curriculum. We believe the word ‘curriculum’ is to be interpreted in its widest meaning. It is every planned learning experience the students have as a member of our school community, both learnt formally within a lesson, and informally outside the classroom embedded throughout the whole school day. It includes the extensive offer of planned activities that we organise to promote learning, personal growth and development. Teachers, instructors and support staff structure these experiences to ensure maximum positive effect on the attainment, progress and personal development of all our students.

Our curriculum consists of activities designed or encouraged within the school’s organisational framework to promote the intellectual, personal, social, physical, therapeutic and cultural development of students. It includes the formal programme of lessons and the informal programme of our extensive range of enrichment activities. The curriculum is robustly designed to ensure that students gain experiences in the following areas of learning:

  • Linguistic (English): with an emphasis on communication integrated throughout the curriculum.
  • Mathematical: Numeracy, with an emphasis on functional and experiential learning.
  • Scientific: Biology: theoretical concepts and practical experiments.
  • Technological: Digital competence and safety.
  • Human and Social: World Around Us (PSHE, Citizenship, RSE), Life Skills, Careers, and History.
  • Physical: P.E. Duke of Edinburgh.
  • Aesthetic and Creative: Art, Music, Design Technology, Arts Award.
  • Therapeutic: Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language, Music Therapy, Psychotherapy and Sensory Circuits. Alongside the taught curriculum, students in all key stages engage in a range of experiences to develop their social and emotional skills.

Many students who arrive at Edison Pace School have experienced disruption to their learning. Many of which, have not attended formal education with consistency, or for a considerable time. Students often arrive as reluctant readers and writers as well as experiencing emotional barriers to learning. We understand the importance of students being engaged in an ambitious curriculum that inspires them to achieve the best they can. Our teaching at Edison Pace School is ambitious for all and encompasses all aspects of the national curriculum.

We offer a flexible curriculum providing both choice and challenge focussed on developing emotional literacy, core subject knowledge and offering a wide range of accredited outcomes. We have a strong focus on the social and emotional aspects of learning and opportunities, ensuring they are absorbing, rewarding and effectively differentiated with diverse teaching styles.  Our curriculum is delivered by qualified, skilled, empathetic and experienced staff within in a warm, safe, nurturing, state of the art learning environment.

Our overall curriculum aim is to enable all the students at Edison Pace School to make a positive contribution to the advancement of society.   Students leave our school to engage in further meaningful study or employment. They will be community-spirited, respectful, law-abiding young adults in full support of democracy and individual liberty.

Admissions and Referrals

We accept placements via local authority consultations for pupils with an EHCP.

These referrals are sent to our Business Development Manager – Kayleigh Sargeant (ksargeant@edison-yp.co.uk).

The EHCP and any additional documents are reviewed and shared with the school.  The SENDCo and Senior Leadership Team consider the consultation documentation as to whether Edison Pace School can meet the needs of the child or young person, and whether there is an appropriate cohort to ensure that should a place be offered, we are confident it will be successful for the young person and the provision they need.

A visit is then arranged so the child or young person and their parent/carer can come to our site and be given a tour. We can then answer any questions that may arise.  Visits can also be planned to observe the child or young person at their current setting and talk with any relevant professionals.

Should we feel confident we can support the child or young person and be the difference they need to promote a fulfilling education offer, we will communicate with the Local Authority to offer a place.

Whilst formal consultations are made through the local authority, we welcome parents/carers to contact us to discuss our offer and how we can support and meet individual needs.
