Life Skills That Support Independence

Young people learn independence over time. These skills can be practised at home, at school or college, or with support services.

Daily Living Skills

Your young person may learn to:

  • cook simple meals safely
  • clean, tidy, and do laundry
  • shop for food and plan meals
  • follow routines and manage daily tasks

Money and Budgeting

Skills can include:

  • using money and making payments
  • understanding bank accounts
  • planning a weekly or monthly budget
  • staying safe from scams
  • learning about benefits and financial support

Health and Personal Care

This may include:

  • managing medication
  • attending health appointments
  • looking after themselves physically and emotionally
  • learning how to stay calm or ask for help
  • understanding safe and healthy relationships

Travel and Getting Around

Travel training can help young people:

  • use buses, trains, or taxis
  • plan routes using maps or apps
  • speak to transport staff
  • stay safe when out in the community

Decision Making and Rights

As your young person grows, they may need help to:

  • make choices about their life
  • understand options and consequences
  • share their views in meetings
  • learn about their rights as an adult
  • understand the Mental Capacity Act and supported decision-making
