Early years inclusive learning service - information for parents and carers
Hazel Trees Nursery
Hazel Trees Education Nursery is an assessment nursery for pre-school children with additional needs. It is not a childcare nursery - places are allocated by the Early Years Forum. The discovery group takes place in the Hazel Trees Nursery.
What is the Discovery Group?
The Discovery Group is a multi-agency assessment group for children under 5 in Stoke-on-Trent involving health, social care and education. There are a limited number of children in each group – places are allocated by the Early Years Forum based on each child’s individual needs. Children who are allocated a place attend 5 nursery sessions over 2 weeks. Parents will receive a letter with the dates that their child needs to attend.
Who is involved in the Discovery Group?
Your child will be observed by a paediatrician whilst in the group. Parents will also have a face-to-face appointment with the Paediatrician at Hazel Trees to discuss their concerns. Your child’s learning and development will also be assessed by practitioners whilst they are playing. Advice, information and support is available for Parents during the sessions. This is provided by volunteers from PEGiS, a local Parent group for Parents who have children with additional needs.
What happens after the Discovery Sessions?
Professionals who have worked with and observed your child will meet to agree recommendations. You will then have a face-to-face appointment to discuss the outcomes of the assessment and the next steps for your child.
