Education, employment and training

This section supports the Preparing for Adulthood outcome: Education, Employment and Training, helping young people explore options after Year 11. It explains local education routes, training providers, apprenticeships, supported internships and employment support so young people can build skills, gain qualifications and plan for their future.

In England, young people must continue in education or training until they turn 18. After Year 11, your young person can choose a path that suits their needs and future goals.

Your young person can:

  • stay in fulltime education at a school sixth form or a further education college. This is a good choice for young people who like structured learning and want to work towards qualifications.
  • start an apprenticeship, which is a real job that includes training and study
  • work or volunteer for 20 hours or more each week, as long as they are also studying part time.

If your young person needs help to pay for books, clothes, equipment, or travel, they may be able to receive support from the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund.
