Independent living

This section links to the Preparing for Adulthood outcome: Independent Living, helping young people learn the skills they need to become more confident and independent. It explains life skills, routines, money management and the different housing and support options available as they move towards adulthood. It is important that these skills are practised before the age of 18 at home as well as in school or college.

Helping your young person build confidence, skills, and control over their life

Independent living is about helping your young person learn the skills they need as they become an adult.
It does not always mean living alone.
 Independent living can mean:

  • living at home with family
  • living with friends
  • living with support in the community
  • living in supported accommodation
  • living in a residential home if they have complex needs

The aim is to help your young person be as independent as possible, in a way that works for them.
