Please read on for information about a range of activities for children and young people who have additional needs, and services to make going out easier. Using services can make a huge difference to your child, young person, family and friends.
We offer a range of short break leisure activities for children with disabilities. We offer some activities that are for free, others may need to be paid for. Please check what is available for you and your family.
Universal Services
These are services available to all children and young people within our local communities through local youth centres, sports and leisure centres, after-school clubs, brownies, scouts or other community activities and our Children Centres.
Targeted Services: Aiming High Short Breaks Programme
We recognise that families may have additional support needs if they have a child or young person with disabilities and our Aiming High Short Breaks programme has been specifically designed to support these families. Accessing these services is not reliant on a formal social care assessment although an assessment of need will be undertaken to ensure each child is safe and their well-being is planned for. These services can be accessed through our lead provider Action for Children, who manage the co-ordination and booking of these activities.
Activities include school holiday activities such as swimming, bowling, day trips and play schemes with regular activities such as attending an adventure playground, sensory fun sessions, art club, fishing and family activity evenings. Their brochure of activities can be downloaded here.
Short Breaks Service Statement
The service provides planned short breaks usually overnight, of varying duration, dependent upon assessment of individual needs, which provides respite for parents and families from the demands of their caring roles.
