Here you will find a range of services offering information and guidance that is available to all; parents/carers, young people or professionals. Some are local to Stoke on Trent and others are national groups.

SENDIASS (special educational needs and disabilities information, advice and support service)

If you have a child with special educational needs, trying to get the best advice and help may seem like a confusing and daunting experience. SENDIASS provide confidential, impartial information from education law on disability, health and social care to help parents/carers, children and young people in making informed choices enabling them to play an active role in relation to educational decisions.

Parent Engagement Group in Stoke - PEGiS

PEGiS is a chance for parents/carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND) and young people with SEND to meet together and informally engage in discussions around educational issues and concerns.

PEGiS meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month and the 3rd Thursday of every month 10-12 at the Hazel Trees In Fenton. Meetings usually last between 1 and 2 hours.

Crescent Pre School Nursery SEND Play Group

Stay and play sessions provide an opportunity for young children with possible and diagnosed special educational needs to meet, make friends and engage in fun activities. The session also provides an opportunity for parents and carers to meet, talk and gain experience from one another.

Mencap is a UK learning disability charity working with people with learning disabilities and their families and carers. Mencap also provides help and support through supported living, supported employment, respite services, organised activities, systemic and individual advocacy, and outreach support.

The National Autistic Society

The National Autistic Society is here to help the 700,000 autistic people in the UK and their families. Be it running specialist schools, campaigning for improved rights or training companies on being more autism-friendly, the National Autistic Society is dedicated to transforming lives and changing attitudes.

Down Syndrome UK

Down Syndrome UK is a national charity passionate about empowering parents and professionals to improve the lives of those with Down syndrome and their families in the UK.

Our children should be valued and included in the communities in which we live, have the choice to attend their local mainstream school and when old enough to work; not to encounter barriers, but instead to be welcomed and embraced within society.

British Institute of Learning Difficulties (BILD)

BILD helps those supporting people with complex needs – including members, universities, government departments, local authorities, NHS trusts, service providers and mainstream organisations - to champion rights, ensure excellent support and continually improve practice. BILD offers:

  • Workforce development, accreditation and training
  • Organisational development and consultancy
  • Grant-funded projects to support government initiatives
  • Communities of Practice, guidance publications and conferences

Disability Law Service

Disability Law Service offers a National Advice Line that provides specialist legal advice and information for disabled people, their families and carers.

HFT

Hft is one of the largest and longest-established charities supporting people with learning disabilities. Services range from residential care and day opportunities to supported living/domiciliary care at home – from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day. Hft provides support that means people with learning disabilities can experience life to the full – from enjoyment, satisfaction and improved health to finding meaningful relationships or paid employment.

Bookstart - free pack for children with additional needs

Bookstart gives free books to every child in England and Wales at two key stages before school, as well as free packs for children with additional needs, tips and guidance on reading together, resources and activities, and much more.

Packs for children with additional needs

Bookstart is for every child, so in England, families are entitled to any of these packs in addition to the two standard Bookstart packs. Please see the Bookstart website page for more information.

Bookshine for children who are deaf

There are two packs: Bookshine Baby (0-2 years old) and Bookshine Toddler (3-4 years old).Each pack has two books, a rhyme place mat (with babies signing) and guidance around sharing books. The toddler pack also includes a bookmark showing British Sign Language.

Booktouch for children who are blind or partially sighted

There are two packs: Booktouch Baby (0-2 years old) and Booktouch Toddler (3-4 years old). Each pack has two touch-and-feel books and guidance around sharing books with blind and partially sighted children.

Bookstart Star for children with conditions affecting their fine motor skills

This pack is available for children aged 3-4 who have disabilities that impact on or delay the development of their fine motor skills. Each pack has a copy of "Off to the Beach!" (an exclusive touch-and-feel book from Child's Play publishers), a board book, a finger puppet for playing along with the story and guidance sheets.

BookTrust has teamed up with publisher Child's Play to create three new tactile books 'Off to the Park!' 'Off to the Beach!' and 'Getting Ready'which you'll find inside the various Bookstart additional needs packs.

Green Door Accessible Cycle Hire

Open Monday to Sat, 10:30am - 3:30pm, Cycle Hire Jan-December (weather dependant during Winter Months)

We have a wide range of standard and accessible cycles for hire. This includes handcycles, companion bikes for two, a tandem, the Velo for wheelchair users and trikes (both adult & children's sizes ) for added stability.

We think we have a bike suitable for most adults irrespective of ability level.

We also have a number of bikes suitable for both older & younger children. We will do our best to accommodate younger cyclists – if your feet touch the ground – you can cycle!

We also have the following additional items for hire, children's trailer, children's rear bike seat, dog trailer

We are based at the beautiful Westport Lake, Tunstall.

The cost to hire for an hour is £5 for Adults & £2.50 for children (with a paying adult) carers ride for free.
Booking is advisable due to the popularity of some of our cycles!

NSAAA - The North Staffs Asperger/Autism Association

The NSAAA provides support, help and advice to individuals with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, their parents and carers. They endeavour to raise awareness in the community in a variety of ways. They have a help line, library facilities and offer parent sessions throughout the month.
